National Symbols of India

India has 17 national symbols and takes pride in them. The symbols tell a lot about India. Indians are proud of it and sense patriotism because of these symbols. Let’s see them one by one.

National Flag:

The national flag is a symbol of a free nation. The national flag of India is Tiranga, which is a horizontal tricolor flag. It has saffron at the top,white in the middle, and green at the bottom in equal proportion.

Saffron indicates the country’s strength.

White indicates peace and truth, with dharmachakra in the center.

Green indicates fertility and the growth of the land

National bird:

The Indian peacock is the national bird of India. Peacocks hold strong importance in Indian culture. Due to its religious significance, it was selected as the national bird of India.

 National flower:

The Lotus is the national flower of India. Lotus embodies beauty, and despite growing in mud, it emits a pleasant fragrance. Due to the significant message of this flower to humanity, it was considered the national flower of India.

National tree:

The Banyan tree is the national tree of India. As it was mentioned in sacred Hindu texts and due to its cultural history, it was declared the national tree of India.

 National Anthem:

Jana Gana Mana is the national anthem of India. It was composed by Rabindranath Tagore.

National river:

The national river of India is the Ganga, or Ganges. Ganga holds immense cultural and religious importance in India. The Ganga is considered a sacred river, and it is associated with several rituals and traditions.

 National Emblem:

The Ashoka Chakra is our national emblem. It identifies sovereignty and the birth of the new Republic of India. It is considered the official seal of India.

National calendar:

The national calendar of India is based on the Saka calendar. The Saka Era marked the beginning of the Sakha Samvat, a historic Hindu calendar. Saka Era marks the remembrance of King Shalivahana.

 National Animal:

The tiger is the national animal of India. The grace,strength, agility, and power of the tiger are the reasons to declare the tiger the national animal.

National song:

The song Vande Mataram is our national song, and it was composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. This song was a source of inspiration for people during the freedom struggle.

National Fruit:

Mango is the national fruit of India. Mango represents prosperity and wealth, and it is known as the king of fruits.

National Game:

Hockey is the national game of India. It is declared so because of the popularity of the game and its historical connection.

National Currency:

The Indian rupee is the official currency of India. The RBI (Reserve Bank of India) issues and regulates the provisions related to currency. Its symbol is ₹.

National Aquatic Animal:

The Ganges river Dolphin, or Susu, is the national aquatic animal of India. Dolphin’s nature represents freedom, intelligence, and friendship.

National Reptile:

The king cobra is the national reptile of India. It has great significance in Indian culture and Hindu mythology.

National Vegetable:

The national vegetable of India is pumpkin. It is regarded as a poor person’s vegetable. It’s adaptability as a climbing plant and a creeper highlights its versatile nature.

National Pledge:

India is my country and all Indians are my brothers and sisters.

I love my country and I am proud of its rich and varied heritage.

I shall always strive to be worthy of it.

I shall give respect to my parents, teachers and elders and treat everyone with courtesy.

To my country and my people, I pledge my devotion.

In their well being and prosperity alone, lies my happiness.
