Verb
Definition:
A verb is a word used to describe an action, state of mind, or occurrence.
The verb forms the main part of the sentence.
Examples: Run, think, sit
Verbs show what the subject is doing or feeling.
Types of verbs:
1. Action verbs
2. Linking verbs
3. Helping verbs
4. Stative verbs
5. Dynamic verbs
6. Regular and irregular verbs
7. Finite and infinite verbs
8. Modal verbs
Action verbs:
These verbs describe a physical action or activity. This action verb is classified into two categories.
1. Transitive verbs
2. Intransitive verbs
Transitive verbs: Verbs are always followed by an object
Pattern of transitive verb:
Subject + Verb + Direct object
Example: Tom drove the car
Intransitive verbs: These verbs are not followed by an direct object.
Pattern of intransitive verb:
Subject + Verb
Example: The train arrives at 8:00 p.m.
Linking verbs :
Linking verbs do not express actions. As the name goes, these verbs link the subject to the details of the subject.
Example: John is an excellent professor
Helping verbs:
When the linking verb alone is not sufficient in a sentence, here comes the helping verb. It helps the linking verb to give a meaningful sentence.
Example: We are listening to the music
Stative verbs:
Stative verbs do not perform any action. These words describe the state of being and are followed by a direct object.
Example: She loves eating chocolate
Dynamic verbs:
Dynamic verbs state an actual action carried out by the subject or a sensation felt by the subject.
Example: He wants to become a doctor
Regular verbs:
Regular verbs follow the usual rule for forming past tense and past participles by adding “ed” or “d” at the end.
Example : Ask – Asked
Stop- Stopped
Irregular verbs:
Irregular verbs are just opposite to regular verbs, and they follow a variety of ways to form past tense and past participle.
Example:
Speak(base) – Spoke (past) – Spoken (past participle)
Finite verbs:
Verbs with tense are called as finite verbs
Examples: Sheela is sweet
Tom asked pizza
In the above examples is and asked are finite verbs respectively and these verbs show tenses
Infinite verbs:
Infinite verbs do not serve as the main verb in the sentence
Example : It is dangerous to drive in the slippery Road
Modal verbs:
Modal verbs show possibility or necessity.
They are a type of auxiliary verb.
Examples: can, should, must etc..
